Loktak Lake

The Loktak Lake means the place where the streams end. And true to its name five rivers get their place here in this lake. 

Lakes are the lifeline of people where rivers and oceans are too far from the main settlement. Loktak Lake is one of the largest freshwater lakes in Manipur, an Indian state in the NorthEastern part of India.

Loktak lake is one of the most beautiful lakes in Manipur. It is famous for the Phumdis(hetrogenous grass). The lake is the lifeline for the people living in the vicinity of this lake for various reasons like livelihood, ecological bio-diversity, water availability and scenic beauty. When views from the top it seems that the lake is impregnated with green and circular shells. The clean and blue sky gets its most vivid and pristine image in the water of this lake. The lake is surrounded by mountain on the four sides.

 How to Reach
The lake is located around 26 km from the main capital Imphal. It hardly takes more than 45 minutes by four wheelers. But not to worry if you want to reach this destination by state bus then this facility is also there. state and local bus ply from Imphal to Loktak. From Delhi and other major cities daily flights are available. After coming to Imphal one can visit this lake.

 Floating House

Floating houses are available in the middle of the lake itself. These floating houses are constructed with such care and detailing that they keep located at particular place. But don't worry these floating lakes will not move away from one location to another. One has to come to the lake area and the bank of the lake the hut owners will take you on boat to the floating hut. And much to your pleasure the cost is amazingly cheaper. It costs only Rs 1500 and that includes accommodation, lunch and breakfast.Yo can go for swimming and boating as well in the lake.

Best Time 
The best time to visit this lake is from November to March. If you are planning to go in winter then you can enjoy the foggy winter, when the entire hills around the lake get engulfed in fog. But if you want to enjoy swimming in the lake then summer is the recommended time.
Scenic beauty
It is one of its kind of the lake in India. Located away from the noise of metro cities, this place is the best location for quality and romantic time. The scenic beauty of the lake makes difference with other locations. The sky looks green and so is the water. The beauty of the phumdis can not be explained in words.
During winter when the moon comes out and its image drops in the water of the lake. I bet you have not seen such a large image of the moon. If you are carrying camera then don't forget to capture this life size image of the moon.

Food
Manipur is place where diverse culture and tradition flourish. And the diversity can be best observed in the food as well. The fresh fish from the lake itself will leave a lasting impression on your palate.
At breakfast you will be served with sweet dish made up of black rice, sugar and milk. The black rice is famous for its nutritional values.
You can request the hut owner to serve you with local food. And your request won't go unnoticed.

Keibul Lamjao National Park


This is the only floating national park in the world. This national park is famous for its Sangai deers , the state animal of Manipur. Make sure you are going early so that you can have glimpses of this beautiful animal.





Loktak lake is a gem in Manipur from a place which is endowed with natural beauty and bio-diversity. Make sure you are not leaving any plastic items in the vicinity of the lake and the lake itself.
